The texture is amazing, think muffin top meets cookie! Soft cake like Buttermilk Sugar Cookies are perfect for any occasion, simple and classic. These Fluffy Buttermilk Sugar Cookies are perfect for a snack, bring to pass at a party, or for a dessert. This recipe has been passed down to me from my grandma, who got this recipe from a friend at church. Learn what’s in them and how to make them below!

Just like the recipe in the instruction card below, these cookies are super simple to make.

You will need:

  • All-Purpose Flour– to give structure
  • Salt– balance and bring out flavors
  • Baking Soda– raising agent so cookies aren’t flat
  • Sugar– for sweetness!
  • Vegetable Shortening– instead of butter, we are going old school with Crisco (vegetable shortening), everything tastes better with it says my grandma!
  • Eggs– to bind ingredients together and for richness
  • Vanilla– for added flavor
  • Buttermilk– acid in buttermilk gives flavor and a soft texture

How To Make Buttermilk Sugar Cookies:

Sift & Whisk Dry Ingredients: Flour, Salt, & Baking Soda

Cream: Sugar & Vegetable Shortening together on medium speed until light and fluffy

Add: Vanilla & Eggs, beat well until fully incorporated with the sugar and shortening

Alternate: Buttermilk and Dry Ingredients into the creamed mixture until fully incorporated, remember to scrape down bowl when necessary.

Spoon: Cookie dough onto a greased cookie sheet by using two spoons to pick up a mound of dough and one spoon to smooth it out. (As shown below) This is not a type of cookie dough that you roll into balls with your hands, think of biscuit dough consistency. This dough will be very sticky. There will be six cookies baked per cookie sheet to allow space for them to expand. This recipe makes 16-18 cookies.

Sprinkle: Each cookie with a bit of sugar on top. The sugar is for looks, as well as a little crunch on top.

Bake: At 375 for 9-11 minutes or until golden on the bottom.

Cool: On a wire rack, and enjoy!

These Fluffy Buttermilk Sugar Cookies are to great to bring to a party/gathering, trust me they will be gone. They’re always gone at my family events! So light and airy, just melt in your mouth. Hope you try these cookies out, enjoy!
